Peter Guare, owner of HyperFormance, was diagnosed with asthma in his 40's. He asked the medical doctor why he suddenly started to have these asthma attacks at such a late stage in his life, his doctor had no explanation. At this point Peter started to look into alternative therapies. He began to learn more about the body and how it handles stress. He found out that the chronic stress from his lifestyle had brought on these attacks and was set on finding ways to help his mind and body heal itself. One of the techniques he found was called Ki-Hara resistance streching, a technique that top athletes use to build core strength and increase range of motion. Peter showed me a few stretches using the Ki-Hara methods. With this technique you perform both static and eccentric muscle contraction, making your body get the most out of work out or stretching program. It is amazing how the body will stabilize itself without even consciously thinking about it. It is hard to explain the different exercises and stretches but they are definitely something that can benefit almost everyone and if you have never experienced it, now is the time.
Peter also showed me his destress/detox room. The therapy involves a relaxation chair and an audio component. The massage chair helps to relax the body while the audio works on relaxing the mind. I have not had the opportunity to try this chair out yet, but the concept behind it is intriguing and I can imagine how an hour of massaging and pleasant audio can help the mind and body unwind and relax.
The last topic that we spoke about was the breathing techniques that Peter teaches. I have somewhat of a background about breathing techniques and from our discussion it is evident that Peter has a good grasp on the breathing anatomy. One of the things that stuck with me is that Peter continued to state (throughout all the techniques, including the Ki-Hara demonstration) that he really wanted to help people help themselves. He wants to give people the knowledge and tools to help them heal themselves. As a chiropractor I believe this is one of the best gifts that you can give to someone.
